Anyone who writes in Chinese is eligible to participate in the Award regardless of nationality or region. Applicants must submit a writing proposal of their work, which can be in process or has not started yet (works that have been published on any public platform do not fall into this category).
The writing proposal must not have received awards or fundings from other organizations, including but not limited to the following: has entered other competitions and won awards, has received fundings from other organizations, is produced by a full-time employee of a media organization. In case of any violation, the Sponsor has the right to revoke the awards.
What exactly are the prizes of the “On-site Award”?
The "On-site Award” is held quarterly four times a year, with $7,000, $5,000, and $2,500 USD awarded to the first, second, and third places respectively. Winners will receive 50% of the prize money when the winners' list is announced, and receive the remaining 50% after the final work is submitted. In case of any special circumstances, participants should contact the Sponsor.
How do I apply?
Applicants must submit a writing proposal that answers the following 5 questions. The response should not exceed 2,500 words.
a. What topic are you planning to write about?
b. Why did you choose this topic? (Why is this topic important? How does this topic relate to you? How does this topic relate to the readers?)
c. How do you plan to execute the plan? (What kinds of interviews, research, or field studies will be conducted? From what angle will it be conducted? How long will it be?)
d. What goal do you plan to achieve with your writing proposal?
e. Briefly describe your experience or past works. What skills do you have to accomplish the goal of this project?
What kind of support will winners receive?
In addition to a prize, each writing project is also equipped with an editor to assist the author throughout the entire writing process until the work is completed. All works must be published before April 30, 2022. In case of any special circumstances, please contact the editor and the Sponsor in advance. The “On-site Award” will connect the selected works with publishing platforms, and will recommend works with potentials to influential Chinese media platforms. All writers who have signed up for the contest have unlimited access to the “2021 Matters free lectures'' and the “2022 Matters public writing lectures”. The copyrights of the winning writing projects and completed works belong to the authors. Winning works must be first published on the Matters platform. Matters and the Renaissance Foundation have the right to the non-profit promotion of the winning works.
